Lucid Motors introduced a major update to their app, improving performance and refining the user experience. However, a critical gap remained—owners lacked a seamless way to add multiple users to their vehicles while maintaining control over access levels. Additionally, there was no streamlined method for users who owned multiple Lucid vehicles to switch between them in the app.

Lucid's newest mobile app UI.

Understanding the Existing System

Before designing a solution, I analyzed both the previous and latest versions of the Lucid app. The updated app had already implemented improvements such as:

  • A native framework for iOS, leading to better performance and responsiveness.
  • A refreshed UI with a more modern, intuitive interface.
  • Enhanced vehicle control features, including better remote access functionalities.

Given these enhancements, I sought to extend the app’s capabilities by introducing multi-user management and vehicle switching while maintaining the integrity of Lucid’s existing design improvements.

Research & Insights

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed similar features in competitor apps, including Tesla and Rivian, focusing on how they handled multi-user access. Key takeaways included:

  • Tesla: Offers driver profiles but with limited access control for secondary users.
  • Rivian: Provides a multi-user system but lacks customization for access levels.

Facebook Poll on Feature Requests

To validate user interest, I conducted a Facebook poll in a Lucid Owners group, asking members which feature they would most like to see added to the app. The options included:

  1. Multi-User Access & Profile Switching
  2. Temporary Guest Access
  3. In-App Messaging Between Owners & Users
  4. Enhanced Battery Health Insights
  5. Smart Home & IoT Integration
The Multi-User Access & Profile Switching feature received the highest number of votes, confirming strong demand among Lucid owners. This data further solidified the priority of designing an intuitive user management system within the app.

These insights reinforced the need for Lucid to have a flexible user management system that allows owners to define access permissions while ensuring an intuitive experience for secondary users.

Design Process

Flow Mapping

Instead of jumping directly into wireframes, I first created a flow map outlining the key interactions:

  1. Primary Owner's Actions:
    • Navigate to the Users & Access section in the Lucid app.
    • Tap Add New User and enter the recipient’s email address.
    • Select the access level for the recipient: Full Access, Driver-Only, or Limited Control.
    • Review the summary and confirm by tapping Send Invitation.
    • The app notifies the recipient via email and in-app notification.
    • The Users & Access section updates to reflect the pending invitation status.
    • Once the recipient accepts, the status updates to Active User.
  2. Recipient’s Actions:
    • Receive an email and in-app notification with an invitation to join as a driver.
    • Tap the link in the email or open the Lucid app to view the invite.
    • If the recipient already owns a Lucid vehicle, they can switch between vehicles in the app.
    • If they are a new user, they proceed with account creation and profile setup.
    • Accept the invite and confirm their assigned access level.
    • Once confirmed, the recipient can now access the vehicle with permissions granted by the primary owner.
    • The app automatically updates, allowing seamless vehicle switching if multiple Lucid cars are linked to their account.
    • Receive an email and in-app notification.
    • Accept the invitation via the Lucid app.
    • Set up a user profile (if they don’t already own a Lucid vehicle).
    • If they own another Lucid, choose between vehicles in a new "Vehicle Switcher" menu.

This flow ensured a logical and smooth experience for both the primary owner and the recipient.

Component Creation

Since I did not have direct access to Lucid’s design system, I recreated UI components as close as possible to their existing system. I focused on:

  • Typography & Colors: Matching Lucid’s clean, futuristic aesthetic.
  • Button & Card Styles: Ensuring consistency with the app’s latest UI elements.
  • Form Fields & Modals: Creating intuitive input flows for adding and managing users.

High-Fidelity UI Design

With the foundational components in place, I moved on to re-creating Lucid’s existing screens, then integrating the new multi-user and vehicle-switching functionalities:

  • User Management Interface: A dedicated section for adding/removing users, assigning roles, and controlling permissions.
  • Recipient Onboarding Screens: A streamlined experience for accepting access, setting up profiles, and managing preferences.
  • Vehicle Switching UI: A simple, intuitive way for users to toggle between multiple Lucid vehicles in the app.

Final Design

The final design blends seamlessly with Lucid’s existing app, providing a frictionless way for owners to manage access while maintaining security and control. The vehicle-switching functionality further enhances the experience for multi-vehicle owners, creating a more versatile and user-centric ecosystem.

Results & Impact

  • Improved Accessibility: Enabled multi-user functionality without disrupting the existing app’s flow.
  • Seamless User Onboarding: A guided process for recipients ensured quick and effortless setup.
  • Scalability: Designed in a way that can be expanded with future updates, such as temporary guest access or smart home integrations.

Learnings & Future Considerations

  • Challenges: Ensuring security while keeping the process frictionless required multiple iterations.
  • Successes: Aligning with Lucid’s evolving design language allowed for a smooth and natural integration.
  • Next Steps: Exploring additional integrations, such as time-based access for guest users.

Future Enhancements

Following this project, several opportunities exist to further enhance the Lucid app experience:

  • Temporary Guest Access: Allowing short-term access with an expiration timer for valets, rental scenarios, or test drives.
  • Smart Home & IoT Integration: Connecting Lucid vehicles with home automation systems to control garage doors, lighting, or HVAC.
  • Advanced User Permissions: Introducing role-based access control for fleet management or corporate vehicles.
  • Enhanced Vehicle Insights: Providing deeper analytics on driving behavior, battery health, and maintenance schedules for all authorized users.
  • In-App Messaging: A secure communication feature for owners and secondary users to coordinate vehicle use and updates.
